Decades Challenges TS4: 1914

The Storm strikes

It was a time of concern and worry. The winter of 1914 was still raging with blizzards and heavy snow when Lucas received news from the continent: War.
He did not think long about his duty, he knew what he had to do. As soon as the ferry was able to take people to the mainland, he left to enlist.

Soon after he left, Valerie found out she was with child again. She thought of writing a telegram, but where to send it? Instead, she telegraphed Mr. Munch, her father in law, letting him know she had important news for Lucas.

That year Virgil tried to get Verity to agree to let him enlist. He argued that as the oldest son, the man of the family, it was his duty to fight, and that Father would not have it any other way. Verity knew the boy was right, but her heart threatened to break again if she had to let another child go. Everywhere looked bleak and dreary to her during that time.

She tried to find answers by her late husband's grave, but there were none. She had to search inside her heart to find her way.

Finally, she agreed, and Virgil left for war since he was a few months short of his sixteenth birthday, when he would be of age to choose to go no matter what she said.
The farm was suddenly very quiet under the mantle of snow the kept falling steadily for what seemed like the longest winter of all for the family.
